The MICA programme



MICA seal

General design



The basic concept of the MICA programme is the fact that pure graphite with its unique properties is protected against oxygen through a MICA barrier zone. The installation of the barrier zone creates inert conditions for the sealing zone.




MICA - flange seal




The barrier zone is arranged in front of the side to be protected. In case of flange seals, the following combinations would be possible for example:




MICA spiral seal



MICA spiral seals are made in stainless steel or Inconel in compliance with the operating conditions. The sequence of soft-material layers is dependent on the direction of loading and will be selected customer-specific.




Pressure-sealed cover rings



The MICA programme is completed by pressure-sealed cover rings for equipment of high-pressure gate valves. Design of these seals is selected customer-specific. However, the metallic components of this sealing system require specific attention.




Fire-safe

MICA Fire-safe

The „MICA fire-safe“ sealing system has been tested for compliance with „fire-safe“ requirements as per British Standard 6455 Part 2. Tests in gate and globe valves comprise spiral seals, gaskets, stuffing-box packings and pressure-sealed cover rings. Test results guarantee the suitability of material for 750°C of permanent temperature (short-time temperature rise to 900°C).

 

The system is composed of a serrated joint with mineral material resistant to oxygen (air oxygen in this case) but without sufficient sealing behaviour of its own, and the graphite zone. This design prevents oxygen circulation on graphite so that the typical ageing phenomena of graphite under influence of oxygen can be excluded in the high-temperature range.




MICA Oxygen

MICA Oxygen

The sealing system „MICA Oxygen“ is certified by BAM for the parameters of 400°C / 70 bar. Certification comprises spiral seals, gaskets, stuffing-box packings and pressure-sealed cover rings.

 

The system is composed of a serrated joint with mineral material resistant to oxygen but without sufficient sealing behaviour of its own, and the graphite zone with utmost purity. This design prevents oxygen circulation on the graphite so that the typical ageing phenomena of graphite under influence of oxygen can be excluded in the high-temperature range.

 

All parts will be supplied free from oil and grease, pre-tempered and packed separately.
